Spanish golfer Jon Rahm has been forced to withdraw from Tokyo 2020 after testing positive for COVID-19.
The world No 1 had been one of the favourites for gold, but will now not take part in the competition that begins on 29 July at the Kasumigaseki Country Club.
During a stellar 2021 season, Rahm won the US Open while also finishing third at the British Open.
Talking about his Olympic ambitions at the British Open, Rahm said: “I am aiming for gold, if possible. It is the Olympics, an opportunity to win an Olympic medal.” Sadly now, Rahm will not be able to fulfil his dream.
The statement from the Spanish Olympic Committee read:
“The positive results came when undergoing his third PCR test, which is mandatory for everyone who has been to the United Kingdom… The first two PCR tests were negative.” The Spanish Olympic Committee and Spanish Golf Federation have said they will not look for a replacement due to the lack of time. As a result, Spain’s sole men’s golf participant will be Adri Arnaus.
In the women’s category, Spain will be represented by Carlota Ciganda and Azahara Muñoz.
