Unknown people have vandalized a section of the new Moroto Main Market. A police source who was inspected the damage says that the vandals gained access inside the market through the grille steel doors.

The vandalism was noticed on Monday by the police deployed at the market when they entered the apartment allotted to them only to find that glasses were smashed.

Other facilitates that have been vandalized include the security lighting system and the flower garden.

Since October 17 when the facility was handed over to authorities of Moroto Municipal Council, the market has openly been accessible to everyone with a limited security presence.

The President Moroto Municipal Development Forum, Simon Nangiro says that the community has not shown responsibility of ownership of the facility. He said that there is a need to deploy enough police officers to guard the facility.

Currently, children and idlers are often seen at the market either playing football in the gardens, park yard.

Richard Sam Lokeris the Chairperson of Nakapelimen Cell in South Division warned parents against allowing their children to play on the compound where they cause destruction. He urged the security personnel to improve access control measures to prevent further damage.

The market was constructed at approximately 22 billion shillings funded by the government and the World Bank.

Police have already been deployed at the facility ahead of occupation by the vendors, some of whom have strongly protested the spacing of the stalls availed to them.
