Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) has extended support to 180 famers in Iganga District to improve their livelihood.
The support, which included 100 pigs, 9,465kgs of maize and 8,000kgs of beans, was handed over on Wednesday at the district headquarters, where farmers from 11 villages were considered.
While handing over the items, Mr Gozan Kasambira, an official from OWC, said farmers were randomly selected by their village leaders and that the project never politicized at any stage of selection as commonly interpreted.
“We didn’t focus on any political parties, our main focus was that a person was a Ugandan and thus being a beneficiary,” Mr Kasambira said.
Lt Col David Banzaliraki also noted that officials that run the project didn’t only rely on the lists that were provided by the village leaders but paid visits to the farmers to attest to their eligibility.
“For those who rear pigs, we visited their farms and made sure they had proper housing and other requirements such as feed if they were to be considered in the project,” Banzaliraki added.
Farmers pledged to efficiently utilize the assistance.
The Resident District Commissioner, Mr Thomas Matende, warned against mismanaging the project.
