At least 32 dogs have been killed as authorities in Kagadi Town Council embarked on a campaign to eliminate stray dogs in the area.
Geoffrey Mugisa, the Principal Town Clerk of Kagadi Town Council says that they are eliminating the stray dogs using DAIT poison, which is placed around garbage dumping sites.
Mugisa says that stray dogs have become a menace and a huge challenge especially to children and residents with livestock because they are not vaccinated and therefore likely to spread diseases.
Mugisa says, poisoning of stray dogs is going to be a continuous exercise and urged the general public to domesticate and vaccinate their dogs. Similarly, Geoffrey Businge, the LCIII Chairperson of Kagadi Town Council says that the plan to eliminate stray dogs is in line with a council resolution to have an orderly and clean town.
However, the move has angered some of the dog owners accusing the officials of failing to alert them on restraining their dogs before the activity started. Joseph Kyomuhendo, a resident of Kagadi town who lost three of his dogs said that that the dogs are attracted to the city centre because of the heaps of garbage that remain uncollected.
Ronald Nsubuga, a resident of Muhumbu cell in Kagadi town who also lost his lone dog explains that the dog was his only source of security since he stays in an isolated place from the town centre.
