Mr James Kakooza has been elected as Uganda’s representative to the East African Legislative Assembly to replace Mathias Kasamba, who died on April 27.
Parliament in a by-election on Monday elected Mr Kakooza unopposed with 183 votes.
Mr Kakooza is an NRM member, and former Kabula County MP in Lyantonde District. He had earlier contested with the former State Minister for Tourism, Mr Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi, and won the party flag.
Mr Kakooza pledged to keep fostering the East African federation.
Mr Fox Odoi Oywelow, the West Budama North East MP, who moved the motion and presented the report of the applicants for the byelection, said they had met with the government Chief Whip, Mr Thomas Tayebwa, Ms Rose Namayanja, the NRM National Treasurer, and Mr Osar Kihika, the director legal at NRM Secretariat.
Mr Odio said it was only fair that the party fills the vacancy.
