Security has launched a manhunt for six suspects following their escape from police custody in Nabilatuk district. The suspect broke out of the cells at Nabilatuk Central Police Station on Monday night where they were being held pending their appearance in court to among others charges of rape, defilement and theft.

Michael Longole, the Karamoja Regional police Spokesperson, says that a team of Regional Crime Intelligence Officers is Nabilatuk to investigate how the suspects escaped.

” We have already started investigating the escape of the suspects and should we find out that there was negligence, the officer on duty will be arrested and charged with negligence, “he said.

Milton Odongo, the Nabilatuka Resident District Commissioner has tasked police to trace and re-arrest the suspects. “As a district security chairman for Nabilatuk district am giving the police only three days to rearrest the suspects because this makes the community lose trust in the force,” he said.

The escape of the suspects has not gone down will the general public with some faulting police for being negligent. Haji Lilah, the Nabilatuka District National Resistance Movement Chairperson, says the escape of suspects with capital offences creates uncertainty in society.

He says that the officers who were on duty should be held responsible for the escape of the suspects. Betty Nakiru, one of the residents of Nabilatuk town council, says that the escape of the six suspects puts the security of the complainants at risk.

“That’s why sometimes we prefer mob justice on some of these criminals because even if you take the case to the police, these people are arrested but they find their own ways out and come back and deal with you who took them to police,” she said.
