A gun that was stolen early this month from the late Erick Habomugisha, a private security guard attached to Special Weapons and Tactics (SWATT), has today been recovered in Kabale District.
Habomugisha, 35, a resident of Kanyabukungu village, Gisorora parish, Nyakabande Sub County Kisoro district was killed by unknown assailants on the 6th of this month while on official night duty at National Water and Sewerage Corporation pump station in Chuho Village, Gasiza Parish, Nyakabande Sub-county.
He was cut several times and his body dumped in the waters of the pumping station before assailants made off with his gun number umber SAR UG PS0 9069985-08751.
Elly Maate, Police Spokesperson for the Kigezi region says that the gun was recovered today at around 10:30 AM in a eucalyptus tree plantation in Kibikuura village, Lower Bugongi ward, Northern Division, Kabale Municipality.
Maate says that the gun was recovered by a farmer who was digging in his eucalyptus tree plantation who found it buried in the soil and immediately informed the police to intervene.
Maate declined to reveal the farmer’s identities in order for him not to be targeted by assailants. He says that two rounds of live ammunition was also recovered buried together with the gun.
On analyzing, Police realized that the gun was only buried a few days ago. He adds that investigations into the matter have intensified since the assailants could have been using it to rob people. The matter is registered at Kabale Central Police Station under file number SD 21/18/06/2021.
On January 28th,2021, Gracious Byaryabakabu, a Special Police Constable attached to Kabale Central Police Station was killed and his firearm registration number 565824456 was stolen with 30 rounds of ammunition. He was guarding at Kabale District Electoral Commission offices located at Makanga hill in Kabale Municipality.
Later Mukwenda Mugisha and Paul Dusingizimana alias Never Give Up were arrested and led security officials Nyabikoni village in Central Division, Kabale municipality where the stolen gun had been hidden. They on February 11, 2021, were sentenced to 100 years by Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) Second Division Court Martial in Mbarara District.
