Patrick Lihanda, head coach of the national boxing team, the Bombers has said the team is well motivated and determined to win medals at the Tokyo Olympics in Japan.
Coach Lihanda’s team has been in residential camp since May 8th at the Kavumba recreation center, Wakiso.
Lihanda told us that his team which has been training twice a day is responding well and nothing will stop them from performing well in Tokyo.
Twaibu Mayanja, the team manager also said the technical team has played its part to prepare the athletes. He however made it clear that it has been unfortunate that the boxers have not had the chance to compete in different competitions because of the different COVID-19 movement restrictions in different countries.
Catherine Nanziri, the only female boxer on the team said she has trained hard and hopes to perform well.
Moses Muhangi, Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) President pledged to give a boxer who wins a gold medal 5 million shillings, and the winner of the silver medal 3 million from him.
The Bombers team is expected to travel to Japan next week to train and get used to the weather before the Olympic Games in July.
The Bombers team comprises; Shadir Musa Bwogi, David Ssemujju and Catherine Nanziri. Initially only Bwogi had secured direct qualification for the Olympics, before Nanziri and Ssemujju were offered slots by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Boxing Task Force.
