The Ministry of Health has started distributing mosquito nets to market vendors in Kampala following a presidential directive last week.
Mr Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the ministry spokesperson, said the exercise started today with vendors at Nakasero Market.
The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwine, kicked off the exercise in the morning.
The initiative comes at a time when President Museveni in a televised address directed that all market vendors should continue operating amid a lockdown across the country for 42 days. Only essential workers are allowed to conduct their business.
This follows surging cases of Covid-19 coupled with high death rates.
Schools, public transport, and arcades, among other businesses were stopped from working with curfew hours lifted to 7pm until 5:30am.
As of Wednesday morning, the country has registered a total of 73,401 cases, 50,085 recoveries, 714 deaths, and 834,271 vaccinations.
