Gulu City Council has allocated 141 Million Shillings for rehabilitating lower health facilities.
These include the construction of staff house at Oitino Health Center II in Bardege –Layibi Division at 96.9 million shillings, Outpatient department rehabilitation at Alokolum Health Center II at 19 million shillings and fencing Unyama Health Center II in Pece –Laroo Division at 25.8 million shillings.
Gulu City Council also earmarked 45 million shillings for purchasing three motorcycles for Bardege, Laroo and Aywee Health Center IIIs, 36 million shillings for fencing the City’s burial ground and 66.5 million shillings for constructing an incinerator at the landfill in Pece –Laroo Division.
The 141.7 million shillings for the rehabilitation works are part of the 2.192 billion shillings allocated to the Health Department for the financial year 2021/2022 budget of 36.9 billion shillings approved by Gulu City Council.
Sister Clara Oloya, the–Charge of Aywee Health Center III in Laroo –Pece Division, says that the Gulu City Authority and the Ministry of Health has a lot to do in the health department said most of them are understaffed despite the overwhelming numbers of patients they receive daily.
According to Oloya, Aywee Health Center III needs a modern incinerator and a garbage skip for disposing of medical wastes, electricity with a standby generator since they are currently using solar light which is not reliable at times.
George Labeja, the former Gulu City Mayor appealed to Gulu City Authority to request the Ministry of Health to elevate the Health Center IIIs and IIs within Gulu City to Health Center IVs and IIIs respectively.
Alfred Okwonga, the Gulu City Mayor says they targeted the lower health facilities because their biggest emphasis is on the annexed areas. He added that they want to ensure that those areas develop uniformly with other parts of the City like the business town centre.
