Thousands of people from all walks of life ranging from the young, youth, adults and elders on Sunday participated in the Rotary cancer run that took place various towns of like Tororo, Entebbe, Kumi, among others but the main event happened in Kampala, with participants taking part in the five, ten and twenty one kilometers races. The early morning shower did not deter the runners from turning up in large numbers to run for a good cause of raising money for the construction of a cancer specialist ward at Nsambya hospital as well as the construction of bunkers needed for the installation of linear accelerators at the facility by 2023. By press time the amount of money that was collected was at shs778m from all the races that took place in all parts of the country. According to Rotary’s Past District Governor Stephen Mwanje, the government needs $5 million (18 billion shillings) to put up a specialized facility where all types of cancers can be treated with in the country as opposed to going abroad where it’s more expensive. Mwanje, however, said that for this year alone, their target was to raise sh1 billion but only 778 million has been collected countrywide. The participants paid 25,000/= for the kit.
