PARENTS TEACH YOUR CHILDREN said Hon. Janet Kataha Museven

Teach and contribute greatly to the education of your children during this period of pandemic virus code named Covid 19, support material wise , counsel and guide them, bond very closely with them, you parents, immediate family members, guardians and care givers said the Minister of Education who also doubles as First Lady and let all the children under your care feel that you are incharge.The children have all chances to learn from the parents guardians and caregivers around them to teach them life skills like cooking gardening, art and craft, cleaning looking after animals, exercises plays with them indoor games like chess etc. In that the learners will develop certain values; positive attitude said the Minister while she addressed the nation in a televised and radio broadcasted nation address on 20/4/2020.

Mrs Museveni while addressing the nation said the Ministry has come out with strategies and processes to enable continuity of learning. Some of the proficiencies to help study harmonized learning packages for use in learning while the children at home. The ministry also prepared guidelines that will be distributed to learners by their respective Local Governments through the office of Chief Administrative officer,  Resident District Commissioners, Sub county chief, parish chiefs and finally to Chairmen village councils to distribute the self-study  materials to learners. Learners in the urban setting will mostly have their material aired on TVs and radios, emails and different websites online studies. She further noted that the materials will still be relevant even after the Lockdown. At every stage of these study material proper documentation was recommended. The young children of nursery level to Primary 0ne  to three will have learning based at home through telling stories, riddles and singing listening, counting, writing speaking in their mother tongue and languages in order to help them enjoy their childhood by the parents and care givers.

Students in universities, Tertiary institutions, BTVET should engage in wide reading, should also read extensively around their courses via their semester outlines and internet-based learning as are guided by their universities and institutions and purpose to acquire desired skills, knowledge to help them when the school reopens.

The National Council for higher Education will follow up to ensure that their enlisted members respond to the needs of the students learning. Now therefor all you teachers, lecturers, instructors of different schools supported by school heads and directors prepare to be able to start immediately when the schools open so that you will not waste any time. This alert is a reminder that after the lockdown all institutions of learning will need to be found ready.

In addition, Ministry will strengthen the sanitation program of water and hygiene, pscho-social support, safety security of learners while coordinating with various stakeholders, Ministry of Health to help avail standard operating procedures to all education institutions.

My ministry will continue to monitor Covid situation in the Country and as will be guided by His Excellency the president and will make further recommendation on the future opening of the schools for now we are in a lockdown until 4th May 2020, when the President will address the nation on the way forward.

She further appealed to learners and their parents, guardians and caregivers to follow guidelines of the Ministry of Health and National task force like avoid touching the soft part of their bodies the eyes, Nose and mouth.

The Minister highly praised Ugandan health workers for the spirited fight against the Corona Virus and ensuring that they efficiently and effectively delivered on the corona infected patients and seeing the majority of the patients recovering was great news to the nation and an assurance that soon the situation will be returned to normal. To all of you our partners government agencies, education agencies, individuals and organization who have supported the education sector during this Covid 19 difficult times I thank you. My ministry will keep you updated on what will happening in the Education sector.
